The stone corner building was built in 1880 as a two-story building on the site of a tavern built in 1805. It was remodeled to add a third floor with multiple stone dormers. The first occupants were Hale Hardware and the Philipsburg Banking Co., which later became the First National Bank. Graham, Herd, and Company, which was selling hardware and harnesses, according to a 1902 directory, had offices and businesses on the second and third floors. At the turn of the century, the second-floor front suite was used by the Philipsburg Club, a group of prominent businessmen. Many of their signatures are recorded in the glass of the windows. Each floor front is slightly different, the first two offering arches. There is a deep roof overhang not original to the 1880 building, but part of a 1916 remodeling. A drug store took the place of the bank after it moved into the modern building just down the street.
