Built by I.V. Gray in 1883, this home took at least two years to build, with marble shipped in from Italy and mahogany from the Philippines. It was later purchased and enlarged by Charles Hedding Rowland (who served in the U. S. House from 1915 to 1919), and the residence came to be known as “The Rowland Mansion.” It was Rowland who removed the former stick style porch and added the present rounded one. Mr. Rowland is also responsible for the Rowland Theatre on Front Street.
