The Heaton House
The Presqueisle Street Walking Tour
Joseph Morrow had his home and blacksmith shop here in the 1820s. The Philipsburg Journal made no pretense of impartiality when it reported in 1870 that “the dilapidated old blacksmith shop” at the site was razed to the ground, “making an improvement to the street.
“Perhaps owners of other useless buildings,” the paper continued, “which are far from being ornamental, will follow this example and forestall the incendiary in his little amusement.”
Later, in April of 1880, Mrs. J.A. Ganoe had the cellar excavated for a new residence, the Journal reported. “Directly opposite,” the paper read, “Dr. Loraine is breaking ground for his new home. Both buildings will be very large and handsome.”
In 1918, Dr. W.R. Heaton built the present house, and it’s likely he “recycled” materials from the Ganoe house in its construction. In his lifetime, Dr. Heaton delivered more than 10,000 babies!
