The Presqueisle Street Walking Tour

Moshannon Hall, or “Halehurst”, across from Mud Church: Hardman Philips, it is written in the 150th anniversary book of Philipsburg, “not content to live in the two-story log structure built by his brothers, and located amidst what few other houses and huts that then existed, ... soon began the building of ‘the Big House,’ a huge rambling structure, located, or more appropriately, isolated on a hill east of the village. What effect his move, which took place in 1813, had upon the popular mind of the day can only be surmised; probably it did not lead to a more cordial degree of understanding between the few settlers and Mr. Philips.” When Hardman Philips eventually disposed of his property and moved back to England, the Hale family came into possession of Moshannon Hall in 1854, hence its current name, “Halehurst.” The home continues to be the private residence of Hale descendants.

***The last location on this tour will be at 925 East Presqueisle Street.
