"The Borough Building"

The Presqueisle Street Walking Tour

borough building.png

“The Borough Building” was built in 1887 by Hoover, Hughes, and Co. It housed the Hope Fire Company until 1960 and was briefly the headquarters of both the Hope and Reliance Fire Companies. The basement housed the town jail. The belfry still contains at its base the drum mechanism used for hanging canvas fire hoses down over the front of the building to dry. In front of the building is an original milepost of the Philadelphia & Erie Turnpike (1821), showing distances from Philipsburg to various towns east and west.
